International Business Development Officer (Commercial Section)

Summary of Duties:

  • The Embassy of Canada to Indonesia is seeking a dedicated and dynamic individual to work as an International Business Development Officer. The International Business Development Officer works primarily with Canadian and Indonesian companies to support Canadian origin exports to Indonesia.
  • Reporting to the International Business Development Manager, the Officer is based in the Embassy of Canada in Jakarta. The position is required to help develop and implement strategies to increase trade and investment activity between Canada and Indonesia.
  • The Officer is assigned and leads on select business sectors and provides business services and advice to companies from Canada which are active in those sectors. The Officer also refers business opportunities in Indonesia to Canadian companies (“clients”).
  • The Officer maintains a network of local business contacts (in Indonesia), develops business plans for assigned sectors, and uses digital media and tools to promote Canadian capabilities and expertise in the Indonesian business community.
  • The Officer plans and delivers events or other activities that promote Canada’s trade and investment priorities, (for example, organizing delegations of Canadian companies to Indonesian or Southeast Asian tradeshows and business matchmaking), manages budgets, and meets performance targets and outcomes.
  • The Officer also acquires knowledge about and reports on the commercial and economic characteristics of the Indonesian market in their assigned sectors, which includes knowledge of: activities and interests of Indonesian companies; products, services and technology; business trends; regulations and government priorities; business processes and procedures; and import patterns.

Area of Selection:

  • This selection process is open to external applicants legally residing in Indonesia at the time of interview and appointment and to mission employees occupying an indeterminate position. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Indonesia. Candidates must meet all of the essential qualifications and their applications must be received by the closing date.

Essential Qualifications :

  • Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.
  • Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

*Language will be assessed further during the process. 

Education:

Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.

  • Degree from an accredited college, polytechnic or university.

Language:

  • Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
  • Proficiency in Bahasa Indonesia, both written and spoken.

Experience:

A minimum of three years’ experience (within the last five years) in the following:

  • Experience in international business development, or foreign direct investment attraction.
  • Experience in providing strategic advice or briefings to management or to clients on international business issues.

Rated Requirements :

  • The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the factors that influence international business success.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of methodologies and best practices involved in developing, planning, and coordinating international trade events or business missions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of key economic sectors, businesses, opportunities, government, and ministries in Indonesia.

Competencies:

  • Networking and Alliance Building

Abilities: 

  • Communicate effectively in English and Bahasa Indonesia, both orally and in writing. 
  • Secure, prepare for, conduct, and provide follow-up to business development meetings with exporters or buyers or investors.

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.

  • A minimum of five years’ experience (within the last eight years) in international business development or foreign direct investment attraction. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Canada’s key economic sectors. 
  • Ability to speak French (intermediate level or higher) will be an asset. 
  • Degree from an accredited college, polytechnic or university in a discipline related to the job requirements (e.g., commerce, marketing, business administration, public relations, international trade).

Operational Requirements:

  • Work hours: (Full-time – 37.5 hours per week). Monday to Thursday – hours of work are from 7:30 am to 4:15 pm with 45 min lunch break, and Friday – hours of work are from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm with no lunch break.
  • Meet the employer’s medical requirements by undergoing a medical evaluation by a physician.
  • Be able and committed to working additional hours as required, and on short notice, during evenings and weekends.
  • Be able to travel both locally and abroad.

Conditions of Employment:

Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.

  • Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
  • Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.

Special Request from Mission / Additional Comments:

  • To be considered for employment at the embassy, candidates must be legally authorized to work in Indonesia in accordance with Indonesian law. Additionally, candidates must successfully pass a Government of Canada security screening, which includes both a criminal background check and a credit check.
