Senior Economic Research Officer

• Non-ongoing for up to 12 months with possibility of extension/permanent, Full-time

About the Treasury :

• As the Australian Government’s lead economic adviser, Treasury helps the government respond to a range of complex challenges and uncertainties, address structural challenges and pursue longer-term national wellbeing and prosperity outcomes. Treasury works on a broad range of issues from macroeconomic policy to microeconomic reform, social policy, superannuation, financial markets, climate change, population, housing, infrastructure financing, foreign investment and tax.
• Treasury provides advice on current and prospective international economic issues and promotes Australia’s interests, including through the G20, multilateral development banks and other international financial institutions. It actively monitors global and regional economic developments to support macroeconomic stability.
• Treasury’s overseas presence is an important face of its international engagement efforts and an integral part of domestic policy development processes. Treasury has a small team in Jakarta responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with government agencies, local policy makers and analysts. It reports on issues relevant to the Treasury portfolio and supports visits from Treasury ministers and senior officials. Treasury works closely with DFAT and other agencies to support the Embassy in advancing Australia’s interests.

About the position :

• The Senior Economic Research Officer will work as part of Treasury’s small team at the Embassy. Under the direction of the Minister-Counsellor, they will assist undertake research, provide advice and prepare reports for the Australian Government. They will anticipate emerging issues and contribute to setting priorities. They will also cover regional issues beyond Indonesia, given the Minister-Counsellor is Treasury’s representative to Southeast Asia. Some regional travel may be involved.

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to :

• Monitor, research and analyse complex economic and policy developments in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on Indonesia.
• Produce a range of high-level policy advice and other written materials including briefing, correspondence, proposals, presentations and speeches.
• Provide technical expertise on Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, for the Treasury/Embassy, including anticipating emerging issues and risks.
• Coordinate and prepare visit programs for incoming Australian ministers and other high-level official visitors to Indonesia.
• Represent the Treasury in the absence of the Minister-Counsellor and at a wide range of local, regional and international events.
• Assist in strategic planning and policy development, including related to Australia’s economic relationships in Southeast Asia.
• Develop, maintain and strengthen an influential network of relationships across a broad range of stakeholders including government, diplomatic, business, academic and NGO contacts.

Qualifications/Experience :

• High-level qualifications, expertise or experience in economics, finance or public policy
• Strong research and analytical skills, preferably facility with data and quantitative analysis
• Demonstrated ability to produce timely, thorough and detailed written products using visual data
• Good understanding of the Indonesian and other regional economies and business environments
• Excellent communication, presentation and liaison skills, with the ability to represent Treasury
• Sound judgment and initiative to anticipate, identify and analyse relevant economic information
